BAYLOR MASSACRE BURIAL SITE

THE TALE  On the night of September 28, 1778, British troops surprised members of the 3rd Continental Light Dragoons while the Americans slept in nearby homes. Eleven soldiers were killed, and others were wounded or captured. Six of the dead were hurriedly buried in old tanning vats beside the Hackensack River because residents feared the British might return. The graves were rediscovered during archaeological work in the 1960s, and the soldiers’ remains were reinterred at the site.
